Online Therapy for Women in Midlife, Anywhere in Maryland
A Maryland practice, not a national platform
Haven is based in Frederick. That matters less for where we sit and more for what we understand: the commute down 270, the school calendar, the way a Maryland winter makes an already tired woman want to go to bed at seven.
We work entirely by video, which means the whole state is our neighborhood. Frederick County and the towns along the 70 corridor. Montgomery and Howard. Baltimore City and the suburbs ringing it. Annapolis and the bay towns, out across the Eastern Shore, and west through Washington County toward Hagerstown and the mountains past it. You meet with us from your house, your office with the door shut, or the car in the pickup line. That last one comes up more than you’d think.
Who comes to us
Our clients are women roughly late thirties to late fifties who are, by most measures, doing well. There is a career, usually a good one. Often children, sometimes aging parents, sometimes both in the same week. And underneath it, something that has gotten harder to explain: sleep that doesn’t restore, a temper with a shorter fuse than it used to have, a marriage running on logistics, grief that never got its turn.
Perimenopause sits in the middle of a lot of this, and it gets missed constantly. Women tell us they raised it with a doctor and got fifteen minutes and a shrug. You know when you’re being dismissed. We start from the assumption that you’re right about your own body.
The access problem in this state
In Bethesda or Columbia you can find a therapist. Finding one who actually knows this season of life is harder, and in western Maryland or out on the Shore it can mean an hour and a half of driving each way, if the person exists at all. That gap is a real reason women wait years to get help, and it’s the reason a virtual practice makes sense here. Care shouldn’t depend on your zip code or your willingness to burn an afternoon on I-68.
How the work goes
You start with a free 15-minute consultation. We talk about what’s going on and what you’ve already tried, and we tell you honestly whether we’re the right fit. If we’re not, we’ll point you somewhere better.
In Maryland, therapy is provided by our founder, Dr. Carla Smith, PhD, LCSW, LMFT, who is licensed here as well as in Virginia, Washington DC, and Georgia. Sessions run a full 50 to 55 minutes with the same clinician every week, someone who remembers what you said last time and notices what you’re skipping this time. Coaching is available in every state, Maryland included, for women who want structure and momentum rather than clinical care.
What it costs
Individual and relationship therapy is $175 for a 50 to 55 minute session. Group therapy is $55 for 60 minutes. Coaching is $175.
Haven is private-pay and we don’t bill insurance. No one outside this practice decides how many sessions you’re allowed or requires a diagnosis before you can be seen. If you have out-of-network benefits, we provide a superbill you can submit for reimbursement, and many clients get a meaningful portion back.
Groups, if you’d rather not do this alone
Our groups run small, six to eight women, led by a licensed therapist, built around perimenopause, midlife identity, and mothering while remaining a person. There is a particular relief in hearing another woman say the thing you thought only you were thinking.
Start with a conversation
Book a free 15-minute consultation and tell us what’s been going on. That’s the whole first step.
Haven is not an emergency service. If you’re in crisis, call or text 988.
